Is Your Garage Ready for Winter?

Summer may feel like it will never leave, but we’re only a few months away from colder weather. Now is a good time to prepare your garage for the cold months of winter, before you actually need those preparations.

What do you need to do in order to protect your garage and its contents against the cold and rain? Here are our top tips:

Ensure the Door Closes Securely

When the garage door closes, is it completely closed? Over time, some garage doors end up being off-kilter and may become more difficult to close completely. If there are gaps at the bottom or around the door, you’ll find that it’s harder to keep the garage warm in the winter and snow will tend to blow under the door. It’s also possible for damp to get in, which can cause even more destruction.

Determine What Will Stay in the Garage

Are you planning to heat the garage? If not, you should make sure there is nothing left there that is temperature sensitive. The cold can ruin many of your belongings and even food items that are often stored in the garage will need to be moved elsewhere if it will be getting cold in there.

If you do decide to use heat, plan to keep it relatively low. You want to avoid freezing temperatures, but higher temps can cause problems with the body paint on your car. It will also make your energy bill higher.

Do You Want an Insulated Garage Door?

If the garage will be heated, an insulated garage door is a good idea, since it will help lower the energy consumption. An insulated garage door is only worthwhile if you have insulation in the walls and ceiling, though. Otherwise, the heat will escape all too easily.

Paint the Floor

Concrete floors are normal in garages, but they can also be bad for the winter. Not only does concrete allow moisture into the garage, which is bad all year, it can also drastically cool the space. You should try painting with concrete paint to help prevent these issues. It will give your floor a new look and also protect the space.

Now is a great time to start preparing for winter. It’s usually simpler to complete tasks like installing a new garage door when the weather isn’t finger-numbingly cold.
